I got a New Job
2002-05-04 - 4:44 p.m.

Here's the deal:

I GOT THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be in charge of the Graphic Design/Advertising at one of the largest dealerships in the Tri-State area, holding 6 franchises: Chevy, Isuzu, Mazda, Subaru, KIA, and HUMMER; and employing over 300 people. It's on Rt. 13 South in New Castle, Delaware. The hours are 40 per week -- 8 a day 7-3, 8-4, or 9-5 Monday thru Friday. Whatever time I come in, as long as I stay for 8 hours I'm cool. And I was told that they were pretty flexible.

I am starting May 16th, and I will be getting paid salary @ 30K a year to start. After the 90 day probationary period, I have full benefits (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) and I may be eligilble for reduced car insurance rates. I have 4 personal/sick days per year and after 1 year I have a week's paid vacation, 2nd year: 2 weeks, 3rd year: three weeks.

They basically just created the position because the additional load was getting too heavy for the Marketing Manger and the Web Delevoper (Shawn) to handle. This being the case they ordered me a brand new top of the line system fully loaded with PhotoShop 7, Illus. 10, and Quark 5.0

They are taking my input on a scanner and a printer; and if budget permits I may get a Wacom tablet.

Additionally, year 1, I recieve $2000 to go towards resources, semiars, classes ect. Year 2 it is $4000, and year 3 it will be $6000.

Part of my learning process will be how to work with their printing companies, and all pre-press activities, eventually being "ramped-up" into taking over the responsiblity of handling all the printing and the contracts with the companies.

Shawn R., the web developer, was the one who conducted the interviews and will be my immediate supervisor. At the beginning, he told me that all projects will be handed through him so I don't have 10 different managers coming to me with projects.

I get the feeling that this is the kind of place that wants me to stay there for a while and from what I hear, they treat their employees really well. My brother's best friend's mom has been working there for 7 years and is the Manager of the Maintance Dept.

And there is something else that is pretty cool, apparently she got her car at the dealership at cost, not retail; so I may have that as a perk as well.

It seems like a great job, since I am the first Graphic Designer on-site they are basically tailoring the job to ME, I don't have a previous designer to "live up to", so to speak and I am bascially going to accrue more reach and responsiblity in the company the long I stay there. I think I want to stay a minimum of 2 & 1/2 years. Who knows, maybe I'll hate it and leave in less than a year or love it and stay for 5 years.

This is just incredible.
